The Space Alien Honors the Moon Landing

This weekend the Space Alien honors the brave American Astronauts who were the first men on the Moon fifty years ago.

Loyal Readers, especially younger ones, can read more about this in many places, including:  https://www.space.com/16758-apollo-11-first-moon-landing.html

The Space Alien traveled independently at a respectful distance from the Apollo 11 spacecraft carrying U. S. Astronauts Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins and Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin to the Moon.
While not qualifying as an astronaut, the Space Alien was proud to have been included in this historic event, as shown in this photograph, exclusive to the Space Alien Gazette.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Note: A Loyal Reader reminds us that Lieutenant Armstrong was famously taciturn after his journey, and suggests that it is therefore not surprising that he never mentioned the extra subject who snuck* into one of his previously unprocessed photos, and further notes that nobody ever asked.
And this same Loyal Reader also found it not surprising that Buzz Aldrin, always focused on the task at hand, noticed nothing but the flag as he saluted!
This is why Your Editor recommends that Loyal Readers rely on the Space Alien Gazette as their most reliable source of unreliable facts!
*Loyal Readers questioning the use of "snuck" as the past tense of the verb "to sneak" can explore this important grammar point here:
While Your Editor remains uncomfortable with "snuck" she will leave it stet.
The Space Alien Considers ICE Activity
Your Editor found the Space Alien whimpering in bed.
"What's wrong?" asked Your Editor.
"I just saw on TV that Immigration and Customs Enforcement -- ICE -- will be rounding up anyone without the right paperwork and taking them away, and I don't have any papers at all!"
The Space Alien's Greatest Fear
"You know I wouldn't let this happen to you," said Your Editor, trying hard to be reassuring, despite serious concerns.
"Why, you pose no threat to our country," she continued, "and besides, you are imaginary, so they probably wouldn't even know where to look for you!  And wouldn't it be irrational to spend valuable resources searching for something that posed no threat?"
The Space Alien exhaled in relief.
"You're right!  Our government would never do anything irrational!"
And with that, the Space Alien fell into a peaceful sleep.
Your Editor, however,  remains concerned.
The Space Alien Celebrates our Nation's Birthday
The Space Alien loves to participate in reenactments of great historical events, especially on July 4, Independence Day.
Besides enjoying a picnic, the Space Alien will study the Declaration of Independence and consider its meaning for today, and how best to enhance life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness for all.
Here is the Space Alien's reading list:
1. The complete text of the Declaration of Independence from the National Archives:
https://www.archives.gov/founding-docs/declaration-transcript
2. More detailed information about the history and text of the Declaration of Independence:
The Space Alien Observes the Summer Solstice 2019
June 21, 2019 marks this year's Summer Solstice, sometimes known in the Northern Hemisphere as Midsummer Night.  This is when the sun hangs around until late evening, takes a short nap, and is up again bright and very early the next morning!
The Space Alien loves this time of year when movements of sun and earth combine to produce seemingly endless days.
Most of all, the Space Alien enjoys playing the role of Puck in summer theatre productions of Shakespeare's play, A Midsummer Night's Dream.
If you have forgotten some details of this play, please review this account by the Royal Shakespeare Company (with a helpful video!):
If you still find this plot too involved to comprehend, don't worry; so does the Space Alien!
But some confusion has never hindered the Space Alien's joyful participation in these summer theatre productions!  And, as you can see from these exclusive photos, the Space Alien is totally believable as Puck, the naughty mischief-maker!
While Loyal Readers may not have a chance to see a production featuring the Space Alien as Puck, we hope many will have an opportunity to attend a production of A Midsummer Night's Dream in their own communities.
The Space Alien Observes Memorial Day 2019
Your Editor noticed the Space Alien becoming quite agitated while watching the news.
"What's wrong?" asked Your Editor.
"I had planned to observe Memorial Day by paying respects at the graves of brave men and women who died protecting our country's freedom," said the Space Alien.  "But I see that the President has declared our free press to be an Enemy of the People!"
"I saw that as well," answered Your Editor sadly.
"Would that be something like what happened in An Enemy of the People, by the great Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen?" asked the Space Alien?
"Yes," answered Your Editor. "Back in 1882 Ibsen wrote this play about a doctor who was called the Enemy of the People because he warned that the water in a local natural spa that was important to the town's economy had become polluted and could make people sick."
(Loyal Readers seeking more information about this play that inspired Steven Spielberg's 1975 movie "Jaws" may click here:   https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/An_Enemy_of_the_People.)
The Space Alien thought deeply about this for a moment and then spoke.
"So you are saying that just as the townspeople in An Enemy of the People attacked the doctor for reporting a public health hazard, our President has attacked our free press, calling it an Enemy of the People for investigating and reporting presidential misdeeds that could endanger us all?"
"That's right" said Your Editor.  "And our President has even called this reporting 'treason,' a crime punishable by death!"
"Well, the President might be mistaken charging the press with treason for reporting on this behavior," said the Space Alien, reaching for a volume of the U. S. Code on a nearby shelf.   "I was just reading this:  https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/18/2381.  I hope our Loyal Readers will examine it too!"
"But this is important news," the Space Alien continued," and I must report it immediately in the Space Alien Gazette!"
"Be careful," warned Your Editor, "because the President might try to declare YOU to be An Enemy of the People as well!"
"No worries," said the Space Alien.  "Remember, I'm imaginary and only live in the hearts and minds of you and our Loyal Readers!   I will get on this right away.  But first I shall pay my respects at the graves of brave men and women who died protecting our freedom, including our freedoms of speech and press."
The Space Alien Gazette respectfully urges Loyal Readers to take time on Memorial Day to remember those who gave their lives to secure the freedoms we cherish.
The Space Alien Celebrates Mother's Day and a Birthday
The Space Alien looked at the calendar and saw that the next day was Mother's Day!
"Oh my goodness," exclaimed the Space Alien, "tomorrow is Mother's Day AND My Editor's birthday as well!  Both on the same day!  This has only happened a few times since she's been a mother, so it's really special!"
I don't know if I even have a mother," continued the Space Alien, thinking out loud, "but My Editor" (who is, Loyal Reader, known here as "Your Editor"), has been like a mother to me!  I don't know if I even have a real birthday, but My Editor always lets me celebrate hers!"
"But My Editor is SO OLD," murmured the Space Alien!  "If I made a birthday cake with so many candles I could burn down the house!  But I know she'll love my portrait in a beautiful frame!"
So the Space Alien whooshed downtown to buy a picture frame.  "I'll pay with her credit card as usual; it's the thought that counts!"
Then the Space Alien found a friendly photographer to take a photograph to put into the beautiful frame.
"I know she'll treasure this more than anything!" exclaimed the Space Alien!
But the Space Alien did not stop here!
"I want My Editor to be healthy, so besides my picture I'll bring some delicious, healthful dishes from Amitabul, a restaurant she loves!"
Owner Bill Choi helped the Space Alien select a perfect dinner!
The Space Alien left with many delicious plant-based dishes, including a platter of special dinner pancakes!
"Oooh so yummy!" exclaimed the Space Alien.
You'll love it and you may even see the Space Alien there!
And to all you great Moms out there, all of us here at the Space Alien Gazette wish you a Happy Mother's Day!
The Space Alien's Passover Tradition
Dear Loyal Readers: Passover, the celebration of freedom, begins this year at sundown on the evening of Friday, April 19, and concludes on the evening of Saturday, April 27.
This is a special time for the Space Alien, who will be busy preparing a traditional holiday meal and doing other observances of this season.
The Space Alien Gazette has made it a tradition, a "minhag," (Q.V),  to republish the following account of a thrilling Passover Encounter of many years ago, along with a favorite holiday song.
We hope you will find it inspiring once again this year.  Here is that special Passover Edition of the Space Alien Gazette, originally published on April 9, 2017.
The Space Alien's Passover Encounter
While enjoying a swim in the River Nile during an Egyptian holiday, the Space Alien was astonished to see a small basket floating along, tilted on its side
The Basket was in Peril
The Space Alien Grasped
the Tiny Hand
The Space Alien was even more astonished to see a tiny hand emerge as the listing basket began to empty its contents into the churning waters of that historic river.
The Space Alien quickly swam alongside, gently grasped the tiny hand, and withdrew a tiny baby from the muddy water.
Fortunately the Space Alien had brought along two large, soft, white beach towels with blue stripes, and carefully tipped the muddy water out of the basket and wiped it clean with one of them.
The Space Alien's Large, Soft,
White Beach Towels with
Blue Stripes
Then the Space Alien carefully wrapped the tiny baby in the second white beach towel with the blue stripes, and gently placed him back in the basket.(Curious loyal readers may scroll to the very foot of this post for more information about why, when traveling, the Space Alien carries at least one towel.)
Moses greets the Space Alien
The tiny baby, now cozily swaddled in the white beach towel with blue stripes, gazed calmly into the eyes of the Space Alien and spoke:
“Do I know you?”
“I’m the Space Alien!”
"My name is Moses," said the tiny baby "and I  thank you for rescuing me!  I haven't learned to swim yet, and I thought I was a goner for sure and would never fulfill my great destiny."
"It was my pleasure," said the Space Alien, "but why are you out here all alone on the river?'
The Princess and
Moses' Sister Miriam
"The ruler — they call him Pharaoh -- wanted to kill little boys like me, so my Mom put me here for safety.  She knew Pharoah’s daughter, the Princess, would see how cute I was and rescue me when she came to the river to wash up.  And see - there she is now!"
"And look," continued the tiny baby, "there's my sister, Miriam, ready to help the princess find a baby sitter who would actually be my Mom!    Everything is all planned and you can even read about it in your Bible in the first two chapters of the Book of Exodus."  (Q.V.)
The Space Alien looked up and, indeed, saw the women standing nearby.
The tiny baby spoke again:
"If I can just get to where they are,  I'll be safe."
The Space Alien nodded in agreement, and then, swimming under the roiling water of the Nile, carefully pushed the basket until it was close to the shore where the women were standing.
The Princess and Miriam
with Baby Moses
"Goodbye, Baby Moses!" said the Space Alien softly, positioning the basket near the reedy bank.  "Be a good boy, fulfill your great destiny with integrity, and always tell the truth."
"I promise!" responded Baby Moses.
The Space Alien waited as the Princess and Moses' sister Miriam, who would love and care for Moses, retrieved him, and watched them wrap him once again in the large white beach towel with the blue stripes.
Then, murmuring "My work here is done,” the Space Alien was soon aloft, traveling through time and space at tachyonic velocities exceeding the speed of light, to the headquarters of the Space Alien Gazette, where your editor was waiting.
"Where were you?" asked Your Editor, "and how did your lovely white beach towel with the blue stripes get so wet and muddy?  And where is the other one?"
"I can explain..." began the Space Alien, but Your Editor impatiently interrupted.  "Oh  we don't have time for another of your 'bubbe meises' (Q.V.) now.  You need to hurry  and get cleaned up.  Tonight is Pesach and our Seder is about to begin!"
The Space Alien wondered: How would Baby Moses use the White Towel with Blue Stripes?
The Space Alien carefully rinsed the mud of the Nile from the large white beach towel with the blue stripes and hung it up to dry, briefly wondering how Baby Moses would use the other identical one in later years, and then hurried to take a seat at the lovely Space Alien Gazette Passover Seder!
What a wonderful Seder it was, with the entire staff of the Space Alien Gazette and their families and friends.
Here is one of the Space Alien's exclusive photographs:
Space Alien Gazette Passover Seder
The Space Alien happily participated in the Seder, munching on matzos while reading the thrilling account of how Moses grew up to become a great leader who guided his people to freedom, and smiled recalling the thrilling rescue of the tiny baby on the River Nile.
Whatever holiday you may be celebrating at this season, or simply to welcome the arrival of Spring,  The Space Alien, your editor, and the entire staff of the Space Alien Gazette would like to wish all of our Loyal Readers good health and much happiness.
And here are the words so you can sing it too!
Yiddish Text Transliterated in Latin Letters:
Shvimt dos kestl afn taykh, Afn groysn nil.
Shvimt dos kestl ruik, glaykh, Shvimt dos kestl shtil.
     Un di khvalyes geyen shtil, geyen tsart un lind;
     Vi zey voltn hitn zikh Ton a leyd dem kind.
Shvimt dos kestl afn taykh,  afn groysn nil.
Shvimt dos kestl ruik, glaykh, Shvimt dos kestl shtil.
     O, di khvalyes zaynen dokh nit vi pare shlekht.
     Nit dertrinken veln zey Meshiekhn fun knekht.
Shvimt dos kestl afn taykh,  afn groysn nil.
Shvimt dos kestl ruik, glaykh, Shvimt dos kestl shtil.
English Translation:
The little basket floats on the river, upon the great Nile
The little basket floats peacefully, steadily,
The little basket floats quietly.
     And the wavelets move quietly, they move gently and softly,
     As if to keep from harming the little child.
The little basket floats on the river, upon the great Nile
The little basket floats peacefully, steadily,
The little basket floats quietly.
    Oh the waves are, indeed, not like evil Pharaoh,
    They would not drown the Messiah of the slaves
The little basket floats on the river, upon the great Nile
The little basket floats peacefully, steadily,
the little basket floats quietly.
A Word of Explanation: Why does the Space Alien Carry a Towel when Traveling?
It was certainly fortuitous on this occasion that the Space Alien had taken along two large, soft, white beach towels with blue stripes, but loyal readers should know that the Space Alien generally carries at least one serviceable towel when away from the offices of the Space Alien Gazette
The Space Alien, an avid reader of science fiction comedy, was profoundly influenced by The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams which appeared in the 1970's as a radio comedy and was since published in many other forms including novel and film.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Hitchhiker%27s_Guide_to_the_Galaxy.
The Space Alien, always on the lookout for practical advice, found the following passage from Chapter 3 of this book to be eminently sensible and strongly persuasive:
"A towel is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have. Partly it has great practical value. You can wrap it around you for warmth as you bound across the cold moons of Jaglan Beta; you can lie on it on the brilliant marble-sanded beaches of Santraginus V, inhaling the heady sea vapours; you can sleep under it beneath the stars which shine so redly on the desert world of Kakrafoon; use it to sail a miniraft down the slow heavy River Moth; wet it for use in hand-to-hand-combat; wrap it round your head to ward off noxious fumes or avoid the gaze of the Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal (such a mind-bogglingly stupid animal, it assumes that if you can't see it, it can't see you — daft as a brush, but very very ravenous); you can wave your towel in emergencies as a distress signal, and of course dry yourself off with it if it still seems to be clean enough.
"More importantly, a towel has immense psychological value. For some reason, if a strag (strag: non-hitch hiker) discovers that a hitchhiker has his towel with him, he will automatically assume that he is also in possession of a toothbrush, face flannel, soap, tin of biscuits, flask, compass, map, ball of string, gnat spray, wet weather gear, space suit etc., etc. Furthermore, the strag will then happily lend the hitch hiker any of these or a dozen other items that the hitch hiker might accidentally have "lost." What the strag will think is that any man who can hitch the length and breadth of the galaxy, rough it, slum it, struggle against terrible odds, win through, and still knows where his towel is, is clearly a man to be reckoned with." — Douglas Adams, The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy.
This is why the Space Alien likes to carry a towel while traveling away from the offices of the Space Alien Gazette, and strongly recommends this practice to loyal readers as well.
The Space Alien Considers a Move
Your Editor was astonished to see the Space Alien at her front door carrying a heavy rucksack and lots of camping gear.
"Where are you off to now?" she asked.
"I'm terribly concerned about how climate change will affect us here on Earth, so I'm checking out another place to live, another planet or even another galaxy," said the Space Alien, setting down the rucksack and the tent, along with a clattering cascade of camp cooking utensils.
"But why? I thought you liked it here!"
"Well, Earth was very nice but it may soon be unlivable," said the Space Alien.  You know how frightened I get in tornados and floods and big storms, and all this freakish weather has been driving me crazy; and see this article about how even tropical diseases are heading towards the Arctic!"
https://news.nationalgeographic.com/2017/06/vibrio-zika-west-nile-malaria-diseases-spreading-climate-change/
"It makes me itch just thinking about it!" continued the Space Alien.
"I think you are making this up!" said Your Editor.
"No!" cried the Space Alien.  "The U. S. Environmental Protection Agency even has a website about climate change!  You should read it sometime!"
https://www.epa.gov/climate-indicators
"Well, I'm very busy now," answered Your Editor, "and this may just be a hoax!"
"But what if it isn't?" said the Space Alien.  "You humans don't seem to be doing a think about this, so I'm checking out a more livable home!"
"But what about me?" cried Your Editor.
"Oh, I'll send you a post card now and then! I know you can't travel at tachyonic velocities exceeding the speed of light the way I do, so you'll just have to get along as best you can!"
With that, the Space Alien reached into the rucksack and pulled out a two-year-old issue of the Space Alien Gazette.
"See!  We even addressed this years ago, but no one did anything about it!"
And, Loyal Reader, you may recall this: http://spacealiengazette.blogspot.com/2016/12/the-space-alien-questions-new-direction.html
The Space Alien reached into the rucksack again and pulled out more documents.
"Just look at this report predicting the mass social disturbance likely to accompany these destructive storms!  Floods, famines, droughts, economic disruptions, mass migrations and other cataclysmic events are likely to occur with increasing frequency!"  The Space Alien displayed an overview with a link to this report:
https://www.cumbria.ac.uk/research/centres/iflas/
And then the Space Alien followed this to the introduction and link to a thirty page report explaining the concept of "deep adaptation" to the cataclysmic events predicted in the wake of climate change:
https://www.resilience.org/stories/2019-03-17/deep-adaptation-post-sustainability-and-the-possibility-of-societal-collapse/
And here, Loyal Reader, if you are having difficulty finding this, is the direct link to that 30 page report entitled Deep Adaptation, A Map for Navigating Climate Tragedy:
http://www.lifeworth.com/deepadaptation.pdf
Your Editor looked over these documents and somberly considered their content before she spoke: "This is important; I hope our Loyal Readers will think about this."
The Space Alien turned to leave, but then stopped to consider life without kind and interesting human friends, and set the heavy rucksack back on the ground.
"I can't leave now!  I want to be here to help you no matter what, but now we have a job to do!"
"We certainly do!" said Your Editor.
I'll tell you what," said the Space Alien, "if you will write a letter to each presidential candidate telling them you will not support them unless they pledge to help stop climate change, I'll deliver them right to their desks!  And then let's think of other ways to protect the future of our beautiful planet!"
And they did!
